SCOTT HERMAN recently retired from Montgomery County Public Schools in Maryland, where he served as the Instrumental Music Director at Cabin John Middle School for 33 years. During his tenure, he built and developed one of the nation’s premier band and orchestra programs, highlighted by performances at the Midwest Clinic and the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) Eastern Division Conference.
Throughout his career, Mr. Herman has been a conductor and preparatory conductor for various MCPS ensembles, including the Junior Band, Junior Strings, Senior Strings, and Senior Band. Additionally, he spent 14 seasons with the Maryland Classic Youth Orchestras and three seasons with the Potomac Valley Youth Orchestra. In 2002, he directed the Maryland Junior All-State Orchestra.
Mr. Herman has received Maryland’s highest honors in music education, including The Corwin Taylor Award for Leadership in Music Education. In 2009, he was named the Maryland Music Educators Association Outstanding Teacher of the Year, and in 2002, he was awarded the American String Teachers Association Outstanding Service to Strings award.
Recognized as a sought-after guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator, Mr. Herman is active throughout Maryland and Virginia in regional and school events. His private trumpet, trombone, and string bass students are regularly represented in all-county, all-state, and regional youth orchestras. As a performing artist, he is a member of the Capital Wind Symphony and various chamber ensembles throughout the region.
